The selftape has become an essential tool for actors and actresses, but what is a selftape and why is it important? <\/span>what is a selftape and why is it important? <\/b>A selftape is an audiovisual recording that you make yourself at home, where you interpret a scene or monologue following the casting director’s indications.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Preparation: The key to a good selftape<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Before turning on the camera, good preparation is essential. As in any face-to-face casting, the work beforehand will make the difference between a mediocre selfie and one that captures the attention of casting directors. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Understand the instructions well<\/b><\/p>\n

    Read carefully and several times the instructions sent by casting management. Often, in our nerves, we overlook important details about the character or scene. Take your time to understand exactly what they are looking for and how they want you to approach your performance. And if you have doubts ask, but don’t ask questions that have already been explained to you, reading comprehension is fundamental in this profession and in life in general. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Learn the text perfectly<\/b><\/p>\n

    One of the most common mistakes in a selfie is not mastering the text completely. Unlike a face-to-face casting where nerves can justify certain oversights, in a selftape you are expected to have had enough time to prepare, record calmly and repeat until you get a perfect take, if it doesn’t come out right the first time the selftape gives you the option to repeat without the casting director knowing, take advantage of that. <\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Technical aspects: Quality DOES matter<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      “How many times have you heard this? Yes, but do it with love. The technical quality of your selfie can be just as important as your performance. A good actor can go unnoticed if their recording has technical problems that distract or make it difficult to watch. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Adequate lighting<\/b><\/p>\n

      Lighting should preferably be natural so that your face is clearly visible and shadows are avoided. Avoid shooting against the light, as this will obscure your face. <\/span><\/p>\n

      If the natural or artificial light is too intense, you can use white curtains as diffusers to soften it. The ideal is even lighting that does not create shadows on one side of your face. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Clear, interference-free audio<\/b><\/p>\n

      Sound is even more important than image. Avoid echoey spaces by recording in rooms with sound-absorbing furniture, rugs or curtains. If your space is very empty, you can place cushions or towels out of plane to reduce echo. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Also make sure to eliminate external noises: pets, neighbors, relatives or roommates. Find the quietest time of day and the most isolated room in your house to record. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Neutral and professional background<\/b><\/p>\n

      We don’t want to know what your bathroom looks like. The background should be as neutral as possible, preferably a plain wall without decoration, posters or pictures that may distract attention. The most recommended colors are white, dark gray or navy blue. If you don’t have a suitable wall, consider investing in a folding backdrop specifically for recordings. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Horizontal format<\/b><\/p>\n

      Unless otherwise stated, always shoot in landscape format, it allows for better framing of your body and expressions. But remember point number 1 and read well the instructions you have been given, maybe the project requires it to be vertical. <\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Your on-camera presence: How to stand out<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Once the technical aspects are taken care of, it’s time to focus on your performance and presence in front of the camera.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Costumes and characterization<\/b><\/p>\n

        If you have not been given any other indication, dress appropriately for the character, but do not overdo it. A full costume is not necessary, but elements that suggest the character without distracting from your interpretation. Avoid flashy prints, thin stripes that create a moir\u00e9 effect or colors that blend into the background. <\/span><\/p>\n

        Position and framing<\/b><\/p>\n

        Position yourself at an appropriate distance from the camera, unless otherwise instructed by an American shot. Leave some \u201cair\u201d above your head and make sure your gestures don’t go out of shot if the character requires movement. <\/span><\/p>\n

        Naturalness and connection<\/b><\/p>\n

        If you record with someone who gives you a cue, make sure this person is not too close to the microphone, as you should hear yourself better. If you have no one to help you, set a point slightly away from the camera to direct your gaze. <\/span><\/p>\n

        1. Shipping and presentation<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The way you send and present your selfie also says a lot about your professionalism.<\/span><\/p>\n

          Correctly name the file<\/b><\/p>\n

          Clearly identify your file with your name and the character’s name, for example: \u201cName – Casting Maria\u201d. This will make organization easier for the casting team and avoid confusion with other candidates. <\/span><\/p>\n

          Appropriate size and format<\/b><\/p>\n

          Make sure the file is not too heavy if you are going to send it by email, use editing programs or online converters to reduce the size without compromising too much the quality. Although we recommend sending it through platforms such as WeTransfer, be careful! Don’t let the transfer expire. Or better yet as a private video on Vimeo or YouTube. <\/span><\/p>\n
